The Department of Chemistry established in 1956, has an illustrious history in sharing the SXC tradition of excellence and has provided regional leadership in chemical education and research. The Department’s strong record of achievement is based on its in chemical research, its success in incorporating these advances into teaching and research programs and its close relationship to government and industry.

The Department’s program of teaching and research spans the breadth of chemistry. General areas covered include biological chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical and analytical chemistry. Specialized areas such as supramolecular chemistry, synthetic heterocyclic chemistry and medicinal chemistry are also covered.

Our Vision

The Department of Chemistry at St Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad seeks to be recognized as one of the best chemistry programs with acknowledged excellence in research, instruction, and outreach.

Our Mission

The faculty are dedicated to the creation and dissemination of knowledge in all aspects of the chemical sciences. We strive to enable students to make meaningful contributions to our diverse, technological society and to improve the lives of the citizens. The short-term goals of the Department focus on improving the educational experience in Chemistry at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and on enhancing the Department’s long-term contributions in research and service to the citizens of the world.
To help us accomplish these goals we remain dedicated to a core set of values: excellence in teaching and research, respect for all members of the Department and University, diversity in our students, faculty and staff, and service.

Undergraduate Programme in Chemistry

Chemistry is offered as a part of several subject combinations. The thrust is in developing a strong foundation in the basic concepts. The curriculum covers every area of Chemistry, comprising inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry. These basics are supplemented with specialized topics like green chemistry, photochemistry and applied chemistry. The students ‘potentials are honed by allowing them to venturing into outside the classroom activities like taking part in poster presentations, workshops etc.

Undergraduate Programme in Chemistry with Vocational Industrial Chemistry

In 1995 the department also began offering a self-financed, vocation course in Industrial Chemistry. Going with the trend for vocational education, the course has been designed with entrepreneurship as a basic flavour. The students enrolling in this programme have chemistry as their core subject with an additional two credit paper of subjects in Industrial Chemistry. The specialized papers comprise of varied topics like

Post-Graduate Programme In Chemistry

The Masters Programme offers an exciting range of educational opportunities, with strengths in both the fundamental area of the discipline, and in significant new areas and applications. Graduate-level course work and research opportunities are available in physical, organic, inorganic, and analytical chemistry as well as in a substantial number of cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas such as material sciences, surface science, spectroscopy, magnetochemistry, and biological chemistry. Moreover, the department has an excellent array of equipments for research/ project works.

Doctoral Programme

Majority faculty members are doctorates, with several of them having PhD guideship. Thus, the department has contributed to many students getting their PhDs. Thus, the department has a wide variety of research areas, which makes it vibrant and competitive. The department has collaborations with several research institutions and companies, enabling the students to do specific work in their labs. This bond has indeed helped the department to grow as a research facilitator.

Career Oriented Programme

Career oriented programme (COP) in “Instrumental Chemical Analysis” was introduced by the Department.

Gujarat is hub of Chemical industries like Dyes, Drugs, Petrochemicals, Cement, Fertilisers, Pesticides etc. All the newly synthesized products need structural evaluation and elucidation. Looking to the importance and requirements of analytical Chemists in such industries, College has introduce this COP.
