Study of Mathematics includes quantity, structure, space and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns, formulate new conjuncture and establish truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions. Mathematics is used as an essential tool in natural sciences, engineering, medicine and the social sciences.
The department of Mathematics was started in 1955 with an undergraduate program. Under the autonomous system, the department is launching a graduate program from this academic year. Studying mathematics develops skills such as arguing logically and rigorously, formulating and solving problems and analysing data. Consequently, Mathematics Majors perform well in competitive exams like UPSC, GPSC, TAS, CAT, GMAT banking exams, etc. So students who want to pursue M.B.A, M.C.A, P.G.D.C.A. or to appear for banking and insurance sector exams prefer to take mathematics as a main subject. Students who want to pursue a career in computers or IT also opt for mathematics.
