Biochemistry was introduced in 1977 at St. Xavier’s College under COSIP (College Science Improvement programme) as a certificate course. Students were offered this course in addition to their usual science subjects and hence, the course was taught before and after college hours. An overwhelming response and keen interest shown by the students inspired the college management to begin an undergraduate course in Biochemistry. The proposal was accepted; an adhoc board of Biochemistry subject was formed and thus began the BSc. Biochemistry programme in affiliation with Gujarat University in 1978. With Biotechnology emerging as a new field in the early 1990s and the UGC promoting Vocational Courses, the department applied for and began Vocational Biotechnology as an additional subject along with Biochemistry in 1995. There has been a steady demand for Biotechnology, which encouraged us to begin a BSc. programme in Biotechnology (Self Finance) under the autonomous status of the college. We now are in preparation of launching a Masters programme in Biochemistry from July 2016. Thus, the department offers three undergraduate courses, one graduate course and three certificate courses in Nutrition and Dietetics, Microbial Technology and Bioinformatics.

The department has a qualified team of 6 teaching faculty members, and three administrative staff members.
